The coast of Tiritiri Matangi island. Sea birds nest on rock stacks offshore,
while native passerines thrive in the islands undergrowth Whist much of the island was cleared for agriculture in the past,
rich pockets of remnant vegetation remain The Tui, one of the worlds most extraordinary avian vocalists This forested gully gives a good sense of the recording location New Zealand Robin or Toutouwai - their soft, piping calls are often heard coming
from the undergrowth. Many of Tiritiris birds are banded for monitoring and research A Bellbird - their delicate tinkling calls are a highlight of the New Zealand dawn chorus,
but sadly not heard as often on the mainland as they may once have been Whitehead, small groups of these birds are heard throughout this recording The Stitchbird (or its Maori name, Hihi) is a native honeyeater with distinctive, sharp calls Many of the native species reintroduced to Tiritiri abound in these densely vegetated gullies Sacred Kingfisher, a species that has likely settled
New Zealand from Australia in the distant past A Saddleback, with its distinctive pair of red facial wattles The Red-crowned Parrot, or Kikiriki There are some seriously old trees to be found hidden away among the remnant scrub The Grey Warbler is the only NZ member of the gerygone family
and has a similarly pleasing, musical call Whiteheads have delightful, buzzy calls, and are abundant on the island A program of planting by volunteers has expanded
the coverage of native vegetation out from these relic areas Saddlebacks are often found foragaing among dense undergrowth.
This one has come out for a sing in the sun The Kokako, with its sad call and facial expression, is exceedingly rare on the mainland,
and the south island race may be extinct. So Tiritiri is an important refuge for them Tui in full voice View from Tiritiri across to the mainland
