Kakadu - Australia's Tropical Wetlands

This recording presents the wonders of one of Australia’s most vibrant natural environments - the world heritage wetlands of Kakadu in the Northern Territory.

As a tropical dawn reflects off the tranquil waters of a billabong, Pygmy Geese dabble among water lilies, flocks of Whistling Ducks call overhead, and Orioles, Kingfishers and Flycatchers sing from among the paperbark trees. The biodiversity of these habitats is quite extraordinary, and a feature of what is to be heard here.

We begin in the predawn at Anbangbang Billabong, at the foot of Noorlangie Rock. Waterbirds abound, and can be heard taking off in waves as they move back and forth between feeding areas. The second sequence of this album comes from nearby Sandy Billabong with its fringe of paperbarks and still waters covered in lilies. You can hear small passerine birds gleaning among the trees on the water's edge, and the drift of waterbird sounds, including the loud croaking of Darters, from across the billabong. Finally, we move away from the wetlands into dry woodland country, to hear the diversity of birdlife found there.

This album is a celebration of life among Australia's tropical wetlands.
